“I feel that there is nothing more
truly artistic than to love people.”
- Vincent Van Gogh
MEET DENEESE
Deneese grew up on a farm in Cambria, California, where she raised sheep and was active in 4-H and FFA. Her love of makering started early with projects like building a chicken coop, crafting small-batch soaps, tending to a garden including pickling cucumbers, and altering thrift-store-bought jeans. She got her first job on her 13th birthday and went on to waitress her way through college at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She made Alameda her home in 1997.
Professionally, Deneese dedicated 20+ years to developing home furnishings for world-class brands, venturing to 26 different countries. Her career allowed her to explore the world, connecting with artisans and creators. Nevertheless, her true dream was to become a teacher, a dream she set aside—until now.
As the founder of Alameda Makering, Deneese’s mission is to create a welcoming space where young makers can explore, innovate, and develop life-changing skills through hands-on learning while creating amazing projects. Her vision is to foster a culture of self-expression, collaboration, individuality, and community within the Makerspaces.
MEET THE JACKSON FAMILY
Deneese and Phil met in 1989, were married in 1995, and made a home out of a small bungalow on Alameda’s east end. They’ve lovingly raised three children – Marcy, JJ, and Clare – making them the “Jackson 5 of Alameda”. The Jackson kids journeyed through Otis, AOA, and Encinal schools, participating in sports, Girl Scouts, and 4-H. Deneese and Phil’s parenting philosophy has always been to prepare the child, not the path. They’ve introduced their kids to a variety of experiences and opportunities while challenging them to be curious in their endeavors and to always advocate for themselves.
MEET LOWLA
Oh, sweet Lowla! She’s our beloved basset hound, and her favorite things include sun-soaked naps, slow walks, fresh carrot treats, and belly rubs. Lowla is an indoor dog and a gentle, friendly presence during all classes and camps. She loves people—and we think you’ll love her too!
Lowla may greet you with a loud bark (it’s just her way of saying hello!), but she quiets down quickly and is never aggressive. She’s calm, affectionate, and enjoys lounging nearby while the kids create and play.
If your child has a strong fear of dogs or pet-related allergies, please consider this before enrolling, as we’re not able to offer a pet-free environment. Have questions or concerns? We’re happy to talk—our goal is to ensure every child feels safe, supported, and comfortable in our space.
