makering
[mak·er·ing] verb
Makering encompasses a range of activities and a blend of creativity, skill, and effort, to achieve a specific purpose or artistic vision.
PROJECTS & LEARNING
We believe that kids learn by doing and that learning by doing (aka makering) captivates their hands, minds, and hearts. So, every day at Alameda Makering is unique, yet kids can consistently expect innovative activities, creative expression, and fun! Projects incorporate the safe use of various tools and creative techniques while promoting the development of life skills. We offer a diverse range of projects that can span multiple days, all of which integrate upcycling and raise sustainability awareness. Projects are demonstrated using best practices, while individual creativity is celebrated. We encourage collaboration to enhance learning, where everyone has a voice to actively share ideas and articulate needs. All classes and camps are small format (8 makers max) and held in Deneese’s welcoming home. All necessary supplies and materials are included.
SKILLS & TOOLS
Across all projects, young makers develop essential skills, sharpen critical thinking, become proficient with tools, and cultivate a creative problem-solving mindset. The upcycling element in each project is a through-line and challenges young makers to transform discarded materials into innovative creations while also learning how to reduce their individual impact. Our project-centered method aims to instill a ‘can-do’ approach in every young maker, promoting confidence, honoring self-expression, and embracing individuality, all within a collaborative, supportive, relaxed, and non-competitive environment.
GROWTH & REWARDS
Alameda Makering projects are unique and serve a dual purpose. As young makers engage in makering, they simultaneously hone their innovation skills. Fueled by curiosity, they unlock the abilities they need to thrive, such as fearlessly embracing new experiences, creatively tackling problems, effectively communicating ideas or needs, and persisting in the face of adversity. Moreover, their newfound confidence, vision, voice, and resilience, become evident quickly. By integrating upcycling into each project, they also learn the vital importance of reimaging, promoting sustainability, and reducing their environmental footprint, creating a uniquely enriching and eco-conscious experience at Alameda Makering.
UPCYCLE
Alameda Makering is deeply committed to upcycling, a practice that sparks creativity and underscores our dedication to environmental responsibility. Our innovative projects empower young makers to transform discarded materials into new, valuable creations. Our commitment to upcycling extends beyond creativity; it’s a core part of our mission to instill a sense of stewardship for our planet in young minds. We believe that every act of upcycling is important, whether it's transforming large materials or repurposing small items like buttons. By upcycling, we reduce waste, lower our environmental footprint, and inspire the next generation to be conscientious global citizens while fostering their skills, creativity, and confidence.
